MUSIC IN THE AIR — A HISTORY OF CLASSICAL MUSIC ON TELEVISION

Germany (2012), 85 min.

Directed by Reiner E. Moritz

Produced by IMZ International Music + Media Center, Arthaus Musik

This is a review of what television brought to musical life over the years, from formats such as “Last Night of the Proms” or the New Year’s Concert to building priceless archives with Stravinsky conducting his own Firebird, the Beatles recording All You Need Is Love and Boulez remembering the Ring of the century or making stars with Anna Netrebko in La Traviata from Salzburg. We also find out what Karajan or Bernstein thought of the medium and how it has helped to popularize music on a hither to unknown scale when hundreds of million people watched the Original Three Tenors.
