In eastern Spain, there are many treasures, but one of them, in the province of Alicante, is particularly unique: Elche is a city that preserves something truly exceptional—within it survives the only remaining “mystery play” once performed throughout medieval Europe. This local festivity and its people are bound together in a pact of mutual survival. The citizens of Elche contribute their work, effort, and passion, and La Festa d’Elx returns to them a sense of identity, memory, and continuity among their own. Throughout the year, they are accountants, teachers, employees, business owners, bus drivers, students, firefighters… each with their own beliefs, ideas, and personal concerns. It’s the everyday life of any early 21st-century city. But every August 14th and 15th, something shifts—time stands still, and they are transformed into vessels of something greater: the driving force of a centuries-old legacy that endures in spite of the present—the Misteri d’Elx.
