Rock’n’rollis a moving story based on the memories of the members of the legendary Bulgarian rock bands Ahat, Review, Era, New Generationand Control. Their revolutionary by the 80’s standards music and lyrics shattered the social conventions and became a guidinglight for the counterculture in Bulgaria.
The rock stars play their biggest hits in the film. They reminisce about the beginning of their journeys — from the creation of the bands in schools and universities to the rehearsals in basements and cellars, from the private concerts for a couple of friends to the big stage.
The musicians remember how the government attempted to tame them by giving them a chance to play in front of big audiences. How they grabbed that chance but remained faithful to their rebellious convictions.
The stars recall the thousands of shows all around the country and share memories about their tours — some funny, some not funny at all.
The musicians remember the euphoric state of mind brought by the political changes in the autumn of 1989. They remember taking part in the rallies of hope. And then they remember the crash of the dreams, the mass emigration from Bulgaria to the West in the early 90’s, from which many of them become a part. They discuss the current state of the Bulgarian rock.
We see a dialogue in absentia between the rock musicians and their former colleague father Bozhidar — a village priest today, a member of Ahatand author of the Bulgarian rock anthem “The Black Sheep” at the time.
The film pays tribute to the outstanding poet and musician Dimitar Voev who left this world at a very young age. His restless spirit lives again in Rock’n’roll through the archive footage and through the amazing songs he wrote for his bands Calaisand New Generation.
Along with the glorious past we see the current everyday reality of the former rebels. Three decades ago they had common goals and ideas, today there are social and philosophical divisions among them. The only thing that they will have in common forever is their shared passion — the rock’n’roll music. And there is a lot of rock’n’roll in this film!
